This initial setup will do two things: it will force you to create a account, and it will update your device's firmware.
#KOBO H20 UPDATE SOFTWARE#
When you start a Kobo e-reader for the first time, it blocks any interaction until you run the setup software (Win/Mac only) or connect the device to a WiFi point.
#KOBO H20 UPDATE HOW TO#

This is an "ugly" that affects every e-reader. IIRC I had to put in a fake American address but it accepted my credit card (which it never charged). I live in Canada and there is no store there. I bought a used Nook some years back (twice, actually) and I had to register for an account with Barnes & Noble. The ugly: you need to register for any e-reader. I've never had this problem with EPUBs or KEPUBs. The text appearance does vary from book to book when using PDFs. The charging port is a bit annoying, I hope the newer e-readers have a USB C charging port. The bad: the power button placement doesn't bother me. I got the official one which is expensive but you should be able to get a cheap one. I use a sleep cover which helps me a lot. The software update helps, but you already got that. The numbers: turn the wi-fi off, you don't need it most of the time. in reviews, on the product listing, on the packaging, etc.). I'm disappointed that the NEED to log-in with a Kobo account wasn't mentioned in advance (ie. mostly open-source / copyright-free / Gutenburg-sourced). The Ugly: Most of my reading consists of files which are transferred from my computer (ie. I'm not sure why, but my Sony Reader happily let me override text appearances as I wished. As well, the charging port should've been flat against the bottom, not tilted upward on an angle - such a change could reduce the likelihood of breaking the connector.Īnother peeve is that changing the text appearance (font size / spacing / margins) doesn't work on all books - sometimes it works, sometimes the book disallows changing it. The button should've been on the "spine"/grip. The Bad: the power button placement! It's not convenient at all, and it renders this a two-handed device. Great price, given the Sony Reader in 2011 was ~$150 USD. I think it also installed a software update on battery power.įinally, I bought it brand-new for the equivalent of $116 USD after discounts. Some numbers: in the past week, I read for 20 hours (as measured by the reader), drained the battery from 100% -> 20% (the most screen brightness I used was around 30%). The screen is very crisp! The backlight is great for reading in sub-optimally illuminated nooks around the house. The Good: In short, it's great! I love the page turn buttons, I love the grip, and I love the size + aspect ratio. It's been a week since I received my Libra H2O/H20 in the mail to replace my aging Sony Reader (PRS-T1), and here are some of my thoughts: Discussion of DRM removal is allowed for books you have purchased legally but please note that legal requirements for DRM vary by region.
